Character Name: Bethany Hawke
Series: Dragon Age II
Timeline: During The Last Straw, right after Orsino is killed.
Canon Resource Link: Here!
Character History: Let’s face it -- Bethany Hawke is, as the younger sister of a malleable protagonist, largely a plot device. Bethany is single-handedly the reason that the Hawke family had to move around while they were children, as she was born into her family as a mage. Leandra, Bethany’s mother, had lost too many nieces and nephews to the Circle, the place where mages were sent to train. She allowed her husband, Malcolm (also a mage) to teach Bethany to control and hide her magic, and never told the Circle of Bethany’s gifts. Because of this, Bethany spent a great deal of time with their father -- much to her twin brother Carver’s chagrin. This is a major part of Carver’s personality, as he always felt like the ‘left out’ child in their family. Bethany feels guilty about this, which is probably what leads to her somewhat strained relationship with her twin. One of her earliest signs of magic was putting a wild dog that had been chasing her and a friend to sleep - her friend did not tell the templars about her because she was 'too nice' to be a mage. Still, having to hide her magic from the world made her decidedly cautious and reserved while secretly thirsting for adventure.
When the family flees from Lothering, the town they had finally been able to settle in, and eventually ends up in Kirkwall, Bethany’s mage status causes an even bigger problem: Kirkwall’s mage Circle is known to be particularly strict. Bethany finds out that her Uncle Gamlen has managed to lose the family's estate. However, he is able to allow the family to gain entry to the city by gaining financing from the Red Iron Mercenaries.
While Bethany and Garrett spend a year working off the debt their Uncle accrued in order to gain entry to the city, they have to be careful to hide her magical talents. Once they are in the city proper, they find out that the Blight has ended in Ferelden due to their cousin's efforts, and that as a result the Deep Roads are no longer as laden with darkspawn as they once were. The siblings attempt to convince a dwarf, Bartrand Tethras, to allow them to accompany him on his expedition as hirelings, but he refuses. They later find out from Bartrand's brother and business partner, Varric, that what Bartrand really needs is sodmeone to finance his expedition -- so the two of them take on various tasks throughout the city to build up their funds. Bethany and Garrett quickly find that the mage and templar conflict in Kirkwall is much more violent and high-profile than in Ferelden, and that there are many blood mages and corrupted members of the Chantry alike. Neither side comes out looking particularly good, and to make matters worse, the Qunari Arishok and his forces have taken up residence near the Kirkwall docks, stirring up trouble with the locals. They meet several companions aside from Aveline, a woman who came with them from Ferelden: Fenris, a former slave that Bethany finds interest in and whom she treats kindly; Isabela, a pirate queen whose exploits both delight and embarrass Bethany; Anders, a mage apostate who runs a clinic in the underworld of the city and who, Bethany says, reminds her of her father; Merrill, a blood mage from the Dalish clan that Bethany finds sweet but somewhat naive; and Sebastian, a pious and (in her opinion) incredibly handsome and charming potential Prince of Starkhaven. They also encounter the leader of the Chantry, as well as several templars including their leader, Meredith, and Cullen (who expresses to Hawke that he has heard rumors about his sister that he hopes are not true).
Throughout these adventures, Bethany states several times that she almost wishes she would be caught. It is of little surprise that when Garrett finally heads off to the Deep Roads on the expedition (with Bethany staying behind at their mother's insistence) and the Templars show up at the door of their Uncle’s home, Bethany does not show much resistance. In fact, Bethany excels in the Circle and is able to gain the title of Enchanter.
During his time in the Deep Roads, Garrett and his companions find an idol made of pure lyrium. The expedition also earns him plenty of fortune and success, allowing him to upgrade his family's dwellings. Three years later, the Qunari conflict is reaching a boiling point as the Qunari people continue to clash and be wronged by the people of Kirkwall. Bethany remains in the Circle, learning and eventually teaching, but is kept informed of her family's events through letters not only with Garrett, but with one of his companions and friends, Isabela. Isabela, it turns out, is also in possession of the reason the Qunari have not left: a sacred text called the Tome of Koslun. A set of serial murders catches Garrett's attention and eventually leads to the kidnapping and death of their mother at the hands of a blood mage named Quentin. Garrett eventually confronts the Arishok about the tome, and Isabela returns it to the Qunari; he also duels the Arishok for the right to keep Isabela safe. The Qunari withdraw, and Kirkwall is once again left to deal with the mage-templar conflict without the distraction of the Arishok.
Driven to the point of desperation by the injustices he and his companion Justice have seen happen to mages at the hands of the Chantry and their templars, Anders places explosives strategically around the Chantry and blows up the building. This leads Meredith, the leader of the templars (who has been corrupted by the lyrium idol Garrett discovered earlier) orders the Right of Annulment, which would allow the templars to kill all the mages in the Circle even though they were not involved in the destruction. Garrett joins the mages in the conflict against the templars, and eventually goes against Meredith herself as well as Orsino, the leader of the Circle. Orsino becomes so desperate and enraged by the death of so many of his fellow mages and the actions of Meredith that he resorts to blood magic and becomes a Harvester that the Hawkes and their companions are forced to kill. Meredith attempts to kill Bethany as well, but Hawke intervenes. This is the point which Bethany will be taken from.
Bethany’s status as a mage is a major point of conflict in the story of Dragon Age II, since the entire story rotates around the mage vs. templar conflict. In the particular world-state that I am bringing Bethany from, Hawke sides with the mages because of his sister’s affiliation with the Circle despite his concerns about blood mages (unfortunately, this also allows him to cultivate a close relationship with the mage who ultimately ends up blowing up the city’s Chantry). Bethany is nearly kidnapped by the Carta, and is later successfully kidnapped by Grace and Thrask, a mage-templar duo attempting to overthrow Knight Commander Meredith. As Garrett is the only family that she has left (aside from her uncle) after her mother is killed by a deranged mage, family is incredibly important to her. This shines through in how she reacts to Garrett’s actions: she approves of his choices when they help families, and disapproves when they break them apart.
As Bethany is coming from just before the conclusion of the Dragon Age II game, there is not much in the way of future events that we know for her except that once Kirkwall is safe from the threat of Meredith she goes to the Free Marches to help the remaining mages from Kirkwall’s Circle.
Abilities/Special Powers:Bethany has gained the rank of Enchanter in the Kirkwall Circle, which means that not only is she a mage who has passed her Harrowing but that she also teaches apprentices magic. So, one can assume she has basic teaching skills. Kirkwall mages focus on the ‘Force’ specialization, meaning her magic involves slamming people into the ground, modifying gravity around them, and using force to protect her from attacks that interrupt combat. Her father also trained her in the Elemental tree, so she is able to use basic fire and ice abilities.
Third-Person Sample: Her head was swimming. The battle with Orsino had taken nearly all her magical power, but it was more than that -- seeing him use blood magic to take the corpses of all the mages that she’d known living and working in the circle to turn himself into an abomination -- it was too much. Too much on top of the templars and countless innocent people who had no doubt been killed when the Chantry had been obliterated. Her heart ached as if her mother and brother had died all over again. So much senseless violence because of Meredith, because of the extremist templars -- she squeezed her eyes shut and when they opened again, she was surrounded by a cave of brick icicles. What fresh hell was this?
“Garrett!” Her voice echoed hollowly in the cave and she spun, panicked. “Garrett!” What if this is some sort of last-ditch effort that Orsino learned from that horrible beast, Quentin? Was she going to be trapped in some sort of labyrinth for the rest of her (probably very short, very painful) life? She scanned the room and let out a sob of relief at the sight of the entrance to the cave, scrambling up the incline with little care for whether she was letting the barbs of once-molten stone bite into her skirts. She rushed toward the point of light, awkwardly using her staff to half-vault her toward the ever-growing gleam.
Blissfully, the Circle-mandated wear was spelled to be durable and once she made it to the sunlight, she skidded to a stop and took in her surroundings, staff at the ready.
“Show yourself!” There had to be someone here, there had to be some meaning of this that could be explained. The pain in her heart was too fresh for this to be heaven, and she had been to the Fade -- this was not it. Impatient at the lack of an answer, she slammed her staff down on the ground. A bolt of flame shoots from the spot it hits, landing nearby in an explosion of sparks.
“I don’t have time for this!” She needed to find her brother, because nothing about this place made any sense.
First-Person Sample: [It takes her a little while to actually learn how to use the network. It isn’t that complicated when one takes into account how many different incantations and staff movements were involved in most spells, so she’s a quick study. More importantly, she has something that she needs to announce.]
You know, I think if the women of Orlais had a closet like this, they would change every hour.
[Bethany, for her part, has already wasted plenty of time trying on pair after pair of shoes -- but, she reasons, there isn’t that much else for her to do. After a moment of consideration, she shifts the camera down to her feet. There’s a giggle from off-screen.]
Aren’t they darling? I think I may need someone to carry me, though. And my staff. I can trade transportation for magic lessons!
